PhD in Nonlinear Dynamics
My thesis, developed under the supervision of Professor Michael Thompson,
FRS, is entitled "Geometrical Methods of Nonlinear Dynamics in
Ship Capsize". The work comprised both theoretical and numerical
studies (mainly the latter) on the application of recent findings in
the field of Nonlinear
Dynamics to the problem of assessing the capsizability of vessels
at sea. The examiners were Dr Steven Bishop
(UCL) and Professor Dracos
Vassalos (University of Strathclyde), and the thesis was approved
on first hearing without modifications.
My doctoral studies were financed by my employer, USP, and by two sponsors: the Brazilian Navy, and FAPESP.
