Professional Experience
Planave Engineering Consultants, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
In worked for this Offshore Engineering Consultants company from
September 1985 to August 1986. Work there was very interesting and
varied, with a good combination of office-bound, computer-based
calculations, and hands-on experience. I was Naval Architect in charge
of the calculation of load-out, transport, and launching operations of
offshore oil platforms. My responsibilities included performing all
technical studies related to these operations with support from a
variety of computer application suites written in FORTRAN and BASIC.
The larger programs were actually run remotely on a CDC machine at a
bureau in São Paulo. That was my first contact with modems and
dial-up networking. Apart from the calculations we performed the real
load-out operations of offshore platforms built by Rio's shipyards.
